Build your Own Solar Water Heater

There are lots of references for building solar water heaters, but one of the best articles we have come across describing the different types and how they are constructed (and what climates they are useful in) is the Rob Harlan / Michael Hackleman interview (free download) at http://www.survivalandbeyond.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Solar-Water-Heating.pdf, from the September/October 2000 Backwoods Home Magazine issue.

They discuss the 7 major types of solar water heaters, which are the biggest bang for the buck when it comes to using the power of the sun in a practical manner.

1. Integral collector/storage
2. Thermosiphon
3. Three-season
4. Drain-back
5. Drain-down
6. Re-circulation
7. Active closed-loop

how to make solar space heater

Why you need solar space heater for your home?

Many space heaters run up your electric bills and end up costing you an arm and a leg in the end. However there is a much more eco-friendly alternative that is not only effective, but is also incredibly cheap and easy to build. Solar space heating are the perfect solution for those who want their garage or other room heated but don’t want to have to pay the electric bills. Making a solar space heater is simple and really only requires a few hours of your time.

How to build your own solar space heater system

build your own solar space heaterNow Let’s start build own solar space heater system. First, you need to gather your supplies. The solar panel requires a frame so you will need some 2×4’s, a glass or Plexiglas panel, some pop cans, black spray paint, epoxy, duct tape, and a polystyrene board. You will also need a drill, a screwdriver, nails, hammer, and a few other tools. If you are wondering how many pop cans you will need, this will depend on how large of a solar space heater you are going to make. Most of the standard ones will require 140 cans because the heater is 3ft by four ft.

Now that you have all of your necessary supplies and tools we can begin to build your own solar space heater system. Build the frame first then prepare the pop cans. With a screwdriver make a large hole in the bottom of each (around the size of a quarter). Now, take some your cans and put them in your frame that is laid out on the ground (start at the bottom and leave a small space at between the bottom row and the frame). Make a row so that each can is side by side, now take a long piece of duct tape and lay it across all of them, binding them to the frame. Add on a second row directly above the first, then add a third row and so forth until you’ve filled up the entire space frame.

Once all of the cans are secured in place and the frame is filled, take your paint and spray the cans and frame so that it is completely black. Next , glue on your Plexiglas to the front of the frame with the epoxy. This will seal in hot air and promote convection. Turn the frame around and secure the polystyrene board to the back of the frame with epoxy then cut 3 evenly spaced ½ inch holes for your vent.

Placement of the solar space heater is crucial. If you have it inside put it in a window that gets the most sunlight, but if you choose to put solar space heater outside, then use a dryer vent to funnel the heat from the heater and into your house. This solar space heater works by drawing the air to be heated into the bottom can of a column of cans.

How to Make Your Roof into a Solar Water Heater ?

There are basically two very similar methods. They both use the sun to preheat the water that is then fed into your regular water heater.

1) Tanks – This is essentially a black water tank on the roof. The dark color absorbs the sun’s rays, heating the water. The advantage of using a tank system is that the water held in the tank often has enough weight to allow the heated water to flow into your water heater as well as new, unheated water to flow into the roof tanks without additional pumping.

The obvious disadvantage is that such a heavy system could require reinforcement of the roof against the sheer weight of the system as well as against wind, as the tank enclosure tends to be a high profile construction.

2) Hoses – Using the same principle as the tank system, fresh water is pumped through dark colored hoses arranged in a serpentine pattern on the roof. While eliminating or reducing the weight and wind issues of the tank system, the hose system has its own concerns.

While the tank system utilizes tanks in a protective enclosure, the hoses in a hose system are exposed to the elements and might not last as long as a tank system. The second issue is that without a great deal of water weight being concentrated in any one place, pumping is the only option to cycle fresh water into the system.

The two systems are pretty much the same, it’s just a matter of which works best for you in your specific situation.

How to Build a Car Radiator Solar Heater ?

A car radiator makes a sturdy, cheap, solar heater. These simple steps will produce a basic design suitable for use as solar water pre-heater.

What materials and tools will I need?
This basic design requires one car radiator, flushed, pressurized to check for leaks and repaired, if necessary. Two rubber radiator hoses and two hose clamps used to attach the radiator in series with the water supply. Finally, black spray paint completes the list of materials. Tools required include a straight screwdriver and a rubber mallet.

What do I do next?
Use the rubber mallet to tamp all the fins flush with the surface on both sides of the radiator. Tamping all the fins increases heating efficiency, in this application. Next, paint both sides of the radiator thoroughly; use at least two coats of black spray paint.

Where do I put it?
Attach the radiator in series before the water heater. Find a location on the south side of the house in direct sunlight.

Is that all there is to it?
Depending on the climate, a housing built around the unit will increase its efficiency. Make sure to use tempered glass on the top. Tempered glass will endure the heat.
